Mid-Michigan rail plans in the works

MT. PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) – Plans are in the works to start up a rail shuttle in a Mid-Michigan community.

Using these railroad tracks for a train shuttle from the south end of Mt. Pleasant to the north end is about three miles.Website Insert Start Here copy

Erin Strang is the CEO of the CMU Research Corporation. She said it wouldn’t take much to put the plan into action.

“Yes, everything’s already in place, the infrastructure is there, the cars have been refurbished, so those are already there and in place, so we just need to pull the trigger and go,” Strang said.

Strang’s staff has been looking at the shuttle project for the past six months or so.

But who would pay for it and how much would it cost?

Well, the first thing to do would be to establish an authority to manage the shuttle.

“We need to create an authority, we need to identify how it’s going to be funded we’re currently establishing a ridership analysis so we’re determining how much of the fees those are going to cover as opposed to how much we’re going to have to offset with different sources,” Strang said.
