Milton Jones has passed away

February 28, 2014

Some of the very last of a revered generation of American professional railroaders is quickly passing away. The Pullman Porters were pioneers in the American labor movement under civil rights icon A. Phillip Randolph, who was a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

One of the last Pullman Porters, Mr. Jones passed away at age 98. His story is one of over 20,000 at their peak in time, and we present it here in honor of a profession of railroaders who consistently made the passenger train experience of their day comfortable, memorable, safe, and pleasant despite their own working conditions and often personal sacrifice of their dignity.

His obituary in the Chicago Sun-Times, 27 February 2014
