Mishaps during Metro repairs: Equipment derails, halting SafeTrack work, and a train rear-ends another

A piece of track equipment derailed in the the zone where Metro is conducting work as part of the first SafeTrack surge shortly after midnight Tuesday, suspending rebuilding efforts in the area and prompting overnight inspections, Metro said. Hours later, a Metro train rear-ended a stopped train at one of the agency’s rail yards, causing the operators to be taken off duty.Website Insert Start Here copy

The incidents occurred over a five-hour span as Metro was in the midst of work as part of its SafeTrack plan, the aggressive rebuilding program aimed at restoring safety and reliability on the system, which began June 4 with 13 days of continuous single-tracking between Ballston and East Falls Church.
