New York City: 6 Amtrak Empire Service trains to use Grand Central Terminal this summer

Metro-North will have some company at Grand Central Terminal this summer.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Interim Executive Director Veronique Hakim confirmed Monday that Amtrak and the MTA have “an agreement” to begin running trains to and from upstate into the east side station, as the national railroad begins much-needed repairs in Penn Station.

“They will be bringing a small part of their Empire Service into Grand Central. We think they’re looking at six trains, three in or three out,” Hakim said. “That could provide some relief at Penn (Station) as well.”

MTA reveals plan to deal with ‘summer of hell’

Acknowledging that Penn Station has become intolerable and will get worse when Amtrak repairs tracks this summer, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced its long-awaited plan to deal with it.

NJ Transit’s summer train schedule is out; for some, it will ‘extend their day’

Commuters have been waiting months to hear about exactly how the Amtrak repairs at New York’s Penn Station will impact them. That information is now available as NJ Transit announced its summer schedule.

The new service plan will have an effect on weekday train schedules from July 10 through Sept. 1. Hardest hit will be the morning commuters on the Morris-Essex commuter line, who will be diverted to ferry service or PATH to cross the Hudson River.
