Dustin Duncan of Southern Illinois University makes the case for retaining all Amtrak service in Carbondale for the benefit of his school and beyond.

Transportation in Southern Illinois could be facing some serious challenges in the near future.

If Governor Bruce Rauner’s budget passes with his current proposal, Amtrak would lose about $16 million, or 40 percent, in state funding. The scary part of that number for Southern Illinois is train service could be reduced dramatically. …

… Not only does train service provide the region with the opportunity to reach the rest of the state, but it is a massive recruiting tool for Southern Illinois University.
