Winona, Minnesota Amtrak to lose station staff; tickets, arrival times available online

August 19, 2015

The Winona Amtrak station will be a lonelier place to visit soon, after the company removes the last remaining staff member.

The move is part of a company-wide program of attrition, which will leave St. Paul and La Crosse as the only staffed stations in the area.

Winona Mayor Mark Peterson said representatives from Amtrak met with city staff recently to inform them of the decision, with the timeline calling for the station to go unstaffed toward the end of the month.

“It’s not what we wanted to hear,” he said.

Travelers won’t be able to buy tickets at the station, and will have to check arrival times online.

Peterson said that the station will still be cleaned and opened and closed, but that will be all.
